Earning High beauty marks
Quality - Iredale Mineral Cosmetics uses state-of-the-art cosmeceutical ingredients to ensure the finest performance in coverage, application and texture. The vitamins and antioxidants found in many of its formulations are pharmaceutical grade.

"Instead of being part of the problem, our makeup line can be part of the solution for everyone suffering from acne, rosacea or environmentally sensitive skin," says Iredale. "It has extraordinary camouflage capabilities without looking thick or pasty, making it ideal for everyone with uneven skin tones-including pronounced redness due to surgical rejuvenation procedures. It also provides fabulous coverage for scars and tattoos."

Manipulating Key Minerals
Quality mineral makeup ingredients are finely milled and then treated with other natural pigments to create different colors and effects. They can be matte, have a subtle shimmer or be over-the-top dazzling. "The quality of a mineral makeup is partly determined by particle size and how the minerals are blended," explains Iredale. "Many manufacturers promote the fact that their minerals are triple-milled, for instance, when in reality, all minerals come that way from the factory. It is what is done with the minerals after they are in the cosmetic company's possession that really counts. We blend boron nitride into some of our formulations, for instance, because it is so silky that it feels like a liquid form of powder. We also have a proprietary process that reduces our minerals to a fine, consistent particle size. These types of after-factory processes affect the consistency of the makeup, as well as how well it looks and stays on the skin."

According to Iredale, different minerals are used for different things:
•Zine oxide and titanium dioxide provide sun protection.
•Titanium dioxide is also used for coverage and color.
•Iron oxides are used extensively for color.
•Bismuth oxychloride has a pearly white, luminescent quality.
•Mica is valued for its luminescent quality, as well as for color.
•Boron nitride diffuses light and gives a soft focus to the minerals.
•Hydrated silica helps control oily shine.
•Dimethicone slows down water loss.
•Ultramarine blue and chromium oxide are used for color.

"Because minerals scatter light when applied to the skin, they act like thousands of tiny mirrors that refract light and obscure visible imperfections such as rhytids and scarring," explains Iredale. "The crystals are water resistant and so light that when applied over clean, moisturized skin, the surface tension adheres them to the skin for hours. When I take a red-eye flight to Europe, I can walk off the plane and right into a meeting with my makeup looking as fresh as when I boarded the plane in New York."

Increased Sun Protection:
New Study on UVA!

According to John D. Simon, Duke University biophysicist: "UVA solar radiation turns a natural molecule on the skin surface into a form of oxygen that speeds up the aging of the skin." Researchers have long known that sunlight damages the skin, but experts say that Simon's study is the first to not only show why this happens, but to link it to UVA rays. The Simon study reveals that UVA sunlight is absorbed by urocanic acid, a natural molecule made by the outermost skin cells. The sunlight chemically changes urocanic acid and causes it to create a type of oxygen free radical within the cells. According to Simon: "This oxygen radical degrades collagen and elastin, which are the major molecules that make up the skin and accelerates photoaging of the skin.”

Going Going Gone
Tattoos present the biggest camouflage challenge for any makeup artist, especially when they are very dark or black. jane iredale developed Disappeartm specifically for this problem. The saturated pigment means that two layers typically covers even the darkest tattoo.

Camouflage for tattoo coverage
1.Make sure the area is clean and well moisturized with the product of your choice.

2.Begin layering Disappeartm over small sections of the tattoo, utilizing either the patented applicator tube, the Detail or the Camouflage brush.

3.Continue until the entire tattoo has one layer of Disappeartm, making sure to feather the edges. Remember to wipe any excess concealer off of your brush in order to blend more efficiently.

4. Then “roll press” the appropriate Amazing Base shade over the entire area. If additional coverage is needed, repeat the process.

5.It is important to feather the edges so that Disappeartm doesn't look like a patch on the skin. Circle Delete under eye concealer can be used to help graduate the edges out.

6.When coverage is achieved, spray with D20 or Balance for a truly opaque, natural finish.

Note: This same technique can also be used to cover post surgicial facial bruising. One quick tip for post surgical makeup application is to help the patient select the appropriate base and concealer shades prior to elective surgery. This allows you to match the skin tone better without the distraction of surgical discoloration.
