EXPLORE CENTRAL NEW YORK STATE

Nestled in the scenic Leatherstocking Region, Turning Stone has historic roots. Excursions can include hikes in state parks, Glimmerglass Opera performances, and Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

James Fennimore Cooper wrote a series of novels on frontier life in this area, notably The Last of the Mohicans set in the Adirondack Mountains near the Oneida tribal home during the French and Indian War. Five books portray a heroic warrior, Natty Bumppo, known as Leatherstocking among English settlers. The clash of empires between France and Britain sparked global wars during the 1750s. Indian tribes sided with both colonial powers, despite doubts that their ancestral lands would be protected (the Oneida Nation was the first ally of the fledgling colonists). Preserving the natural wilderness of central New York, the Leatherstocking Region is a vast recreation area for hikers, bird watchers, and boaters. On the shore of Ostego Lake (called Glimmerglass in the books), the Glimmerglass Opera summer festival presents fully staged productions. Nearby in Cooperstown, New York, the Baseball Hall of Fame documents the national
game’s legacy.

Worth. Amtrak features regional service to close by Rome, NY. Turning Stone provides roundtrip ground transfers to/from nearby airports and train stations. The nearby Oneida County Airport accommodates private jets and helicopters. (Turning Stone will have its own heliport completed this fall).
