Sometimes the upper Midwest (U.S.) is viewed as the desert of spa-dom, in part because of stereotypical attitudes, where some think that it’s a place where “cheese heads” go to dust off their red flannels and go fishin’, huntin’ and chewin’, or where corn grows as high as a pachyderm’s eye. But seriously, this area does offer a number of amenity and destination spas that have become strong contenders in the highly desirable and competitive spa market. If you’ve ever perused the pages of “Spa Finder”, “Condé Nast Traveler” or “Spa Management Journal” for example, you’ve probably noticed a spa or two from this geographical area, which have garnered kudos for being the “best” in their category.
In recent months, I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing some of this area’s spas, which have included the Four Seasons Hotel & Spa (Chicago, IL), American Club & Kohler Waters Spa (Kohler, WI), Doral Eaglewood Conference Resort & Spa (Itasca, IL), and Sundara Inn & Spa (Wisconsin Dells, WI). Each has its own unique “spa footprint”, offering guests wonderful amenities, healing therapeutic treatments and an experience well worth the trek. In this article, I’d like to focus on the new Sundara Inn & Spa, which opened in mid-March 2003. It was named after the Sanskrit word, “beautiful”, very à propos.
