Daufuskie's oysters, known for their high quality were shipped all over the world, but when pollution invaded the nearby Savannah River, many of the oyster beds were lost and the industry never fully recovered. Once the Great Depression hit in the early 30's, it forced many to leave the island in search of other jobs.
