Whenever Loews Hotels sets its sights on something, the end result is always impressive, done right and with stellar results! So it is with its new spa jewel, SEA SPA, at their Loews Coronado Bay Resort, located in San Diego, CA. Nearly two years in the making, the new spa opened in December 2003. Trendy and chic, the clean sleek architectural lines of the new spa complement the overall classic California feel of the resort. Basked by brilliant sunlight, the resort and its exceptional new spa are cozily positioned with the Coronado Bay, its Yacht Marina and multi-million dollar homes. Here is where singles, couples and families have been coming for years to vacation and revel; now, they can also get restored and revitalized by experiencing this wonderful spa.

The new SEA SPA is 12k s.f. overall (an investment of $5M), and skillfully combines the best in high-tech, trend, tradition and innovation. Director David Devan and his staff not only share a passion for excellence, but their collective amount of industry expertise is enviable, and a huge plus for each guest. SEA SPA is also the only full-service spa, salon (aptly named SPRAY) and fitness center in the general area. SEA SPA has fifteen indoor and outdoor treatment rooms, including a couple’s suite; separate well-appointed men’s and women’s locker rooms, complete with steam and sauna are also available.

The fitness center, complete with weight training Cybex equipment, treadmills, stationary bikes and elliptical units; spinning classes are also conducted in this area. The room comes complete with floor-to-ceiling sliding windows, offering a breathtaking and airy distractive view of the Marina for those guests who pump it up and don’t want to get bored.

Adjacent to the exercise room is a separate fitness studio, a bit smaller than the fitness center; the floors are spring-loaded, which structurally adapts well to the variety of classes offered each week; these include aerobics, BOSU cardio, kickboxing, basic and Rahini Yoga, spinning, Pilates, meditation and belly dancing; the latter is a huge hit with resort guests; there are usually more takers than available spots for the class. (A suggestion: this room is adjacent to the spa’s main entry, and with heavy traffic patterns, a peripheral distraction for the instructor and class attendees often occurs, since the glass areas are not covered with some form of barrier material; closing in the area in this manner, might reduce the overall “feel” to the size of the room, however.)

Guests can also avail themselves to the expertise of certified fitness instructors who personalize fitness routines for each guest to take home with them; guests receive regular follows-up on their progress; my session with Michelle, the lead CFT, was incredibly beneficial and informative.
