Skinsational new MediSpa in Carlsbad
builds upon the wellness mission of the day spa

Recently expanded luxury day spa partners with Dr. Mark Mofid to
cater to high demand for medical spa services

Skinsational Skin and Body Spa recently opened a new MediSpa at its recently expanded location in Carlsbad Village. Under the direction of Del Mar-based plastic surgeon Mark Mofid, M.D., a cache of cosmetic surgical procedures and treatments will round out the day spa's comprehensive menu of spa services.

According to Skinsational's founder and director Joyce Carboni, a licensed esthetician with over 24 years experience in the skincare industry, the new services build upon the wellness mission of the day spa. A trend that has been popping up in many large cities, a medical spa offers treatments that require a doctor's supervision, such as laser resurfacing and Botox injections, in addition to traditional spa services. A survey of the spa's 100 most frequent clients conducted by Carboni prior to opening the new location revealed a tremendous demand for medical spa services, particularly those that eradicate pigmentation problems and unwanted facial hair.

"Our mission is to provide a luxurious haven where our guests receive nurturing of mind, body and spirit," said Carboni. "By extending our skincare services to include MediSpa service offerings we are able to bring to our mainstream clientele the benefits of many of the exciting and dramatic new tools, procedures and discoveries that are taking place in cosmetic surgery. Dr. Mofid is an excellent plastic surgeon and we are honored that he has chosen to expand his practice by working with us."

At the MediSpa, located in a private area separate from Skinsational's other day spa facilities, Dr. Mofid and aesthetic laser specialist, Jessica Davis, R.N., will conduct a variety of non-invasive cosmetic procedures including Botox, Restylane, and Captique injectables, laser hair removal and spider vein reduction. In addition, Dr. Mofid will offer on-site consultation on surgical procedures such as breast reduction and augmentation, face lifts and brow lifts. The MediSpa carries through Skinsational's aura of total comfort and relaxation, even featuring a separate, private exit for patients leaving the spa after treatments.
Dr. Mofid, a plastic surgeon who received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and his undergraduate degree from Harvard University, also has a full service plastic surgery practice in Del Mar. Approximately half of his current practice focuses on reconstructive surgery for patients who have suffered from skin cancer, breast cancer and massive facial trauma.

As reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in its annual statistics report for 2006, minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures increased 11 percent in 2005 (up from seven percent in 2004) to nearly 8.5 million procedures performed, with laser hair removal, chemical peels, Botox, soft tissue fillers and microdermabrasion topping the list of most popular. Meanwhile, surgical cosmetic procedures rose just four percent in 2005, and the overall number of non-surgical cosmetic procedures has more than doubled since 2000. New, more cost effective procedures and technologies combined with an aging baby-boomer population have increased the public's interest in less risky cosmetic procedures.
